ABSTRACT

This article intends to discuss the specificities of adolescence, especially the issues that touch the body as a way of expression. The psychoanalytic clinic with adolescents has pointed out the contemporary forms of suffering and subjectivation, with the body becoming a crucial condition for the expression of the current malaise. In the face of the Other of adolescence, which is shown to be insufficient, unlike the Other that the child had as consistent, the teenager is faced with the Real. From this encounter, the teenager is faced with feelings of anguish and the nameless, making the condition of existence fragile. Linked to the physiological changes resulting from puberty, causing a pulsional excess that invades and takes them out of their speech, the adolescent finds in the body a favorable and unique field of inscription. This body of helplessness starts to be used as a means of expression and possible translation in the composition of the social bond. The psychoanalytic clinic, in view of the above, thinks about spaces for this body, with a view to saying that it is possible in the discursive construction. Keywords: Adolescence. Body. Psychoanalysis.

ABSTRACT

The system to evaluate psychological tests (Satepsi) received notoriety among Brazilians and foreigners for offering a complex system of qualification of psychological tests, which is rarely seen worldwide. Its development depended on an autarchy (which financed, standardized, and maintains it) and on researchers teaching psychological assessment, who brought their expertise to the area so its parameters could be fully established. After two decades of its launch, Satepsi was the subject of articles, chapters, lives, and digital dialogues, which usually highlighted the Resolutions of the Federal Council of Psychology that normatize psychological evaluation and their impacts, such as the increase in the number of qualified Brazilian tests. This study aims to mention its construction in the light of the authors who experienced Satepsi in different functions and times, giving special attention to Projective Methods, whose history remains to be shown.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The research shows that personality assessment can be achieved by regression model based on electroencephalogram (EEG). Most of existing researches use event-related potential or power spectral density for personality assessment, which can only represent the brain information of a single region. But some research shows that human cognition is more dependent on the interaction of brain regions. In addition, due to the distribution difference of EEG features among subjects, the trained regression model can not get accurate results of cross subject personality assessment. In order to solve the problem, this research proposes a personality assessment method based on EEG functional connectivity and domain adaption. This research collected EEG data from 45 normal people under different emotional pictures (positive, negative and neutral). Firstly, the coherence of 59 channels in 5 frequency bands was taken as the original feature set. Then the feature-based domain adaptation was used to map the feature to a new feature space. It can reduce the distribution difference between training and test set in the new feature space, so as to reduce the distribution difference between subjects. Finally, the support vector regression model was trained and tested based on the transformed feature set by leave-one-out cross-validation. What's more, this paper compared the methods used in previous researches. The results showed that the method proposed in this paper improved the performance of regression model and obtained better personality assessment results. This research provides a new method for personality assessment.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

The aim of the study was to compare the sociodemographic characteristics, level of vocational indecision (EIV), perceived general self-efficacy (EAGP), personality (BFP) and maturity for professional choice (EMEP), of adolescents with and without giftedness. The sample consisted of 31 adolescents with a mean age of 16.29 years (SD = 1.21), 12 with giftedness and 19 without. The gifted students were recruited from a State Center for High Skills/Giftedness and the non-gifted students from a private school. The two groups of adolescents answered the same instruments, including a sociodemographic data form, the EMEP, EIV, BFP and EAGP. The non-gifted students presented lower levels of self-efficacy (EAGP) and higher levels of neuroticism (BFP) and responsibility (EMEP). The gifted adolescents presented higher levels of achievement (BFP), self-efficacy (EAGP), determination (EMEP), extraversion and openness (BFP), and self-knowledge (EMEP). The results can help professional and career counselors to design more assertive actions for gifted adolescents. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Parental Alienation (PA) is a modality of psychological violence identifiable in the context of child custody disputes in courts of law - institution that provides a rich source of research data. To analyze the national and international literature on PA of studies conducted with court documents, this study consists of a systematic review, performed according to the PRISMA guidelines, on the Scopus, PsycNET, PubMed, and Scielo databases, as well as in the library of the Laboratory of Analysis and Prevention of Violence (LAPREV/UFSCar), for articles including the keyword "parental alienation" and its respective Portuguese translation. The search provided six samples: five articles selected from the databases (three Brazilian, one Canadian, and one Italian) and a Brazilian book from the lab collection. Most judicial sentences analyzed in the selected studies corroborate the psychological reports conclusions. However, the psychological evaluation of alleged PA cases of Brazilian and Italian reports showed concerning deficiencies, with emphasis on biased opinions, lack of adequate standards, poorly planned assessments, and questionable theoretical background. These findings stress the urgent need to develop strategies for improving psychological assessments to strengthen the protection and guaranteeing the rights of children involved in marital litigation.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The Callous-Unemotional personality it is well examined among bullying aggressors, however little is known regarding this characteristic in victims. The present study aimed to investigate the insensibility and coldness in children living under bullying circumstances. Sixty children of the 6° school grade took part in the study, divided in groups of aggressors (n=15), victims (n=15), bully-victims (n=15), and a control group (n=15). Personality and behavior assessment scales were applied. Results revealed that victims showed a lower level of Callous-Unemotional personality compared to other groups, and also presented a higher level of pro-social behavior. It turns necessary to investigate if lower levels of those personality traits are associated to a higher passivity in victims and, consequently, to a greater probability of being target of bullying.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction Research suggests that religiosity domains are associated with mental health constructs. Some studies have focused on the relationship between religiosity and personality disorders. Objective To investigate the relationship between religiosity domains and pathological traits of the borderline (BPD) and schizotypal (SZPD) personality disorders. Methods Participants were 751 adults from the general population who answered the Multidimensional Inventory for Religious/Spiritual Well-Being (MI-RSWB-E), the Attachment to God Inventory (AGI), and factors of the Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory 2 (IDCP-2). Pearson's correlation and regression analysis were conducted with pathological traits as independent variables and religiosity domains as dependent variables. Results Correlation and regression analyses indicated slightly higher associations between religiosity domain and BPD traits in comparison to SZPD traits. BPD traits showed higher associations with the hope immanent, forgiveness and hope transcendent domains, while SZPD presented higher associations with connectedness. The SZPD-related paranormality factor presented the highest correlation observed in the study and was the best SZPD predictor of religiosity domains. The BPD-related hopelessness factor was the predictor with significant contribution to most regression models. BPD traits presented slightly higher average association with religiosity domains, whereas spiritual-related domains (e.g., connectedness) tended to show higher associations with SZPD traits. Conclusions Our findings help explain the relationship between specific pathological traits and religiosity domains.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Determine if preprocedural anxiety is an independent risk factor for the perception of severe pain during an outpatient surgical hysteroscopy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were 179 patients included in this cohort study. The STAI-S questionnaire has been applied to assess the preoperative anxiety of the patients and distribute them into two cohorts: Patients with anxiety (STAI-S>50) and patients without anxiety (STAI-S 7. The association and the risk between both variables have been calculated using X2 test and relative risk (RR). Pearson's correlation test was used to assess the correlation between both variables. A p value < 0,05 has been considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Patients who perceived severe pain during access to the uterine cavity (78,3% vs 29,5%; p<0,001) and during the surgical procedure (78,8% vs 26,2%; p<0,001) were mostly patients with preoperative anxiety. The RR of patients with anxiety to perceive severe pain is 6.46 (95% CI; 2,52-16,60) during access to the uterine cavity and 6,61 (95% CI; 3,04-14,38) during resection. We have found a moderate and positive correlation between the scores obtained on the STAI-S questionnaire and VAS score during access to the uterine cavity (r=0,629; p=0,042) and during the surgical process (r=0,661; p=0,021) CONCLUSIONS: Patients with preprocedural anxiety are more at risk of perceiving severe pain during access into the uterine cavity and during the hysteroscopic intervention.

ABSTRACT

Determining oral health-related quality of life in elderly patientswith removable prostheses who have increased difficulty inreporting oral issues is imperative for a successful rehabilitation.Aim: Our objective is to assess the extent to which a trace,or personality dimension, can influence oral health-relatedquality of life (OHRQoL) in rehabilitated patients. Methods:135 participants rehabilitated with removable prosthesis wereevaluated in the Clinical Unit of Removable Prosthodontics ofthe Faculty of Dental Medicine of Porto University, Portugal. TheOral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire was appliedto evaluate oral health-related quality of life, along with theEysenck Personality Inventory (E.P.I.) to determine a personalitytrait. Statistical analysis was carried out using Mann-Whitney,Student's t-test, Spearman's rho and linear regression. Results:No statistical correlation was found concerning age, gender andoral health-related quality of life. Regarding the latter, the highestagreement was found on the question involving "pain in teeth".The prevalence of acrylic partial dentures, as opposed to partialdentures with metallic framework, was substantially higher. Nosignificant association between both extraversion/neuroticism(E.P.I.) and oral health-related quality of life (OHIP-14) uponrehabilitation with removable prostheses was found (p>0,05).In our study, personality traits neuroticism and extraversion didnot influence oral health-related quality of life with removableprostheses. However, we should not overlook the importance ofother psychological factors (such as motivation or perception)and their role in determining oral health-related quality of life. Conclusion: Personality traits "extraversion" and "neuroticism"did not influence oral health-related quality of life

ABSTRACT

Abstract The literature investigating the process underlying the answers given in self-report tests for personality assessments is scarce. This study aimed to develop a protocol to investigate the response process of people who responded to a self-report instrument for personality assessment. It also sought evidence of content validity for this protocol. The protocol presented focused on grandiosity, representing the narcissistic functioning. A total of 35 people answered the Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory (IDCP) and the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5). Favorable evidence was identified, indicating the proper functioning of the developed protocol, since the literature showed consistent information about it. For example, it was observed that people who scored higher in grandiosity on self-report tests were those who chose the alternatives that represented grandiosity characteristics and were also those who presented a higher baseline to consider someone as narcissistic. The protocol is expected to be replicable by other researchers who aim to verify the response strategies adopted in self-report type personality tests.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is clinically and complex because of the difficulty of interpreting symptoms, frequent comorbidities, the clinical heterogeneity and the lack of specific indicators. Many instruments have been developed for evaluation, of which we highlight the scale of observation for the diagnosis of autism (ADOS) and the interview for diagnosis of autism, revised (ADI-R); the sensitivity and specificity of these tests is high, even more when they are used together. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of ADI-R and ADOS as complementary tools for the diagnosis of ASD, particularly when they are discrepant from the clinical diagnosis. METHODS: This is a retrospective study, a review of the clinical records of 44 patients (36 male), average age 6.7 years, with a suspicion of ASD between June 2015- May 2017. ADIR+ADOS-2 were applied blindly to the initial clinical hypothesis. The definitive diagnosis is certified after a long-term follow-up (6-58 months). RESULTS: In 37 of 44 patients the initial clinical diagnosis was ASD; in the remaining 7 other psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders were diagnosed. ADI-R+ADOS-2 were concordant with the clinical diagnosis in 39 (89%), excluding 7 and in 32 confirming the diagnosis of ASD, adding the degree of severity in the latter. In 5 cases there was discrepancy between the initial clinical diagnosis and tests; in these 5 cases the specialist suspected ASD and the tests disproved it; after the long-term follow-up the test's diagnosis was confirmed in 4 of the 5 cases, and in the remaining case the clinical diagnosis was confirmed. The most frequent differential diagnoses were social communication disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder comorbid with language development disorder, and anxious disorders. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnosis of ASD should be clinical and made by a medical specialist who considers a multiplicity of variables. ADI-R+ADOS2 were complementary tools, particularly in cases in which ASD was rejected, urging the treating team to search for differential diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Background: Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder in people with suicidal behavior. The knowledge of its risk factors should help to design preventive strategies. Aim: To describe suicidal behavior and risk factors for attempted suicide in people with major depressive disorders (MDD). Material and Methods: A 12-month follow-up study was conducted in 112 outpatients at three psychiatric care centers of Ñuble, Chile, with baseline and quarterly assessments. Demographic, psychosocial and clinical factors as potential risk factors of suicide attempts, were assessed. A clinical interview with DSM-IV diagnostic criteria checklist, Hamilton Depression Scale and the List of Threatening Experiences and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were applied. Results: Sixty seven percent of participants had suicidal ideation and 43.8% had attempted suicide. Suicide risk was significantly higher in participants with a single major depressive episode (odds ratio [OR] = 3.98; 95% confidence intervals [CI] = 1,29-12,32 p = 0.02) and those with previous suicide attempts (OR = 13.15; 95% CI = 3,87-44.7 p < 0.01). Young age, not having a partner, being unemployed, having a severe major depressive episode, having psychotic symptoms, having a personality disorder and being devoid of medical illness increased the risk of suicide attempts, but they did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Significant risk factors should be specially considered when designing suicide preventive strategies in patients with MDD.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between depression and aggression in patients with coronary artery disease. METHODS: This study used Korean version of Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI). SPSS/WIN 23.0 statistical program was used. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffé-test to know the differences in depression and aggression according to the general characteristics. The correlation between depression and aggression was analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to determine the effect of depression on aggression. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant effect on verbal and physical aggression according to sub-factors of depression. However. aggressive attitude due to emotional depression was statistically significant (β=.23, p=.031). CONCLUSION: If nurses recognize the psychological and emotional problems as well as the physical symptoms of patients with coronary artery disease and train themselves in a systematic manner, they will be able to return to their normal daily lives.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to identify the predictive level that personality dimensions have on the students Body Image, as well as their possible relationships, and to compare such variables according to the sex of the participants. The study population were students of three technical careers at a public educational institution in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. The sample consisted of 567 students. The Body Shape Questionnaire was used to measure the Body Image. The Neo Personality Inventory Revised NEO FFI (reduced version of the NEO PI-R) was used to evaluate the personality. Regarding the results, a multiple linear regression analysis identified the predictive variables of the Body Image unsatisfied, the dimension of the personality called "Neuroticism" and the female sex. In addition, significant relationships were found between the dimensions of personality "Neuroticism", "Extroversion", "Kindness and Responsibility" with body image and significant differences in it according to sex. It is suggested that later studies include other characteristics that could explain the presence of Body Image dissatisfaction in adolescents and confirm the influence of the predictor variables identified.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare psychological test profiles of psychiatric outpatients with high and low depression/suicide ideation and to identify predictor variables for depression/suicide ideation. METHODS: Component scores of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) were compared using t-tests. Discriminant analysis was conducted for predictor variables of depression/suicide ideation. RESULTS: Regarding PAI profiles, somatic complaints (SOM), anxiety (ANX), anxiety-related disorder (ARD), depression (DEP), paranoia (PAR), borderline features (BOR), antisocial features (ANT), mania (MAN) drug problems (DRG) scores were significantly elevated in high depression and high suicide ideation groups. Concerning MMPI-2 profiles, the scores of hypochondriasis (Hs), depression (D), hysteria (Hy), psychopathic deviate (Pd), paranoia (Pa), psychasthenia (Pt), schizophrenia (Sc), social introversion (Si) were significantly elevated in these same groups. The PAI and MMPI-2 profile shapes were remarkably similar between high depression and high suicide ideation groups. Therefore, in terms of psychological profile, depression and suicidal ideation seemed to reflect the same construct. However, in discriminant analysis, significant predictors for depression were found to be Pt and D Sc from MMPI-2, while those for suicide ideation were found to be Pa and Sc, suggest subtle differences. CONCLUSION: The superficial characteristics of depression and suicide ideation groups reflected by the psychological test profiles seemed similar, but the determining factors may differ. Thus, the psychological interventions for these two groups may have to follow different routes considering these subtle differences.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The structure of character strengths and virtues in different cultural contexts across the globe has failed to recover the six-factor solution originally proposed by Peterson and Seligman. This study aims to assess the structure of the Character Strengths Scale, a test created to assess character strengths and virtues and the association between these strengths and personality factors in the Brazilian context. The sample was made up of 981 undergraduate students (60.5% female) aged between 17 and 26 years (M = 20.7, SD = 2.2), who responded the Character Strengths Scale and Personality Factors Battery. Exploratory factor analysis indicated that the three-factor solution was the most theoretically appropriate, identifying the following factors: Intellectual Strengths, Intrapersonal Strengths and Collectivism, and Transcendence. Regression analysis showed that three personality factors (conscientiousness, extraversion and neuroticism) are relevant predictors of these strengths, explaining a considerable amount of variance. The implications of the findings are presented, suggesting that high levels of neuroticism may impair the flourishing of strengths.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND The presence of psychiatric symptoms, anger, and personality characteristics are factors that affect the quality of life of newly diagnosed digestive system cancer patients. OBJECTIVE This study aims to identify which stable characteristics of the individual’s personality interfere with quality of life, even when reactive emotional characteristics of falling ill are controlled. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed at the Oncology Clinic ( Hospital das Clínicas ), Marília/SP, Brazil, in which 50 adult patients with digestive system cancer and diagnosed less than 6 months answered the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, Temperament and Character Inventory, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and WHOQOL-BREF. Multiple regression was performed to verify if quality of life was related to stable characteristics of the subject’s personality (anger trait, temperament and character) after controlling to the transient emotional aspects (anger state, psychiatric symptoms). RESULTS The quality of life psychological health score was higher in presence of self-directedness character and reward dependence temperament and quality of life environment score was higher in presence of self-directedness character and lower in presence of harm avoidance temperament. CONCLUSION The psychological well-being and the adaptive needs to the environment that favoring a better quality of life were reinforced mainly by the self-directedness character; which means that patients more autonomous cope better with the disease. On the other hand, the harm avoidance temperament (meaning the patient has fear of aversive situations) impaired the adaptive capacity to deal with the changes of the day-to-day imposed by the disease. Understanding these personality traits is important to the health professionals drive the patient to more successful treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to develop a Personality Assessment Scale for Hospital Employees (PAS-HE). Most current personality scales for recruiting employees have focused on evaluating the negative aspects of mental health. The present study sought to develop a Self-Report Questionnaire that assessed not only mental health problems but also positive personality traits and character strengths, as well as capabilities for hospital work. METHODS: Initially, a preliminary item pool was constructed and administered to psychiatry outpatients (n=44), hospital employees (n=217), and normal adults matched to hospital employees (n=217). Using the data from the three groups, the final 250 items for the PAS-HE were selected. Next, using data from 637 normal adults, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and factor structure were examined and age norms were calculated for each of four age groups (18–25, 26–35, 36–45, 46–55 years). RESULTS: The PAS-HE showed moderate to high internal consistency, good temporal stability, and good construct validity. Factor structure and t-score norms (mean=50, SD=10) for each age group were established. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicated the reliability and validity of the developed PAS-HE, suggesting that the PAS-HE can be time- and cost-efficient when used for recruitment and human resource management in hospitals.
